Party people rejoice - Sharkie’s second release is grown on the same rootstock as its first: jubilant atheism, irrepressible melodies, hating the world but loving your friends! Forever carrying a torch for the golden age of Midwest emo, Sharkie continues to bear out that age-old punk tradition of making pessimism sound like a party, but like some of their more observable influences (Jimmy Eat World; Joan of Arc), Sharkie proves with Life Sux that there’s nothing slack about their brand of negativity. Striking a balance, as ever, between laid-back vibes and meticulous songwriting, the band’s addition of a guitarist to its bass-drums-keys lineup allows for more complexity, and an ostensibly greater patience for slower tempos lends a new level of assuredness. Life Sux is a blossoming of Sharkie’s internal contradictions into something as forward-looking as it is nostalgic; as chilled out as it is urgent.
